On February 17, 2025, Savannakhet Province witnessed a remarkable instance of international collaboration aimed at enhancing maternal and child health and nutrition in Lao PDR. A delegation led by the Ministry of Health, the Government of China, and UNICEF made significant strides in evaluating the impact of their joint initiatives.
The delegation, including H.E. Dr. Phayvanh Keopaseuth, Vice Minister of Health; H.E. Ms. Fang Hong, the Chinese Ambassador to Lao PDR; and Mr. Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani, UNICEF Country Representative to Lao PDR, toured several health facilities, including the Donaxay Health Centre and the Savannakhet Provincial Hospital. During a bilateral meeting, Vice Governor H.E. Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune expressed gratitude for the steadfast support provided by UNICEF and the Chinese government in implementing health programs across the province.
This three-party partnership, initiated in October 2022 with support from China’s Ministry of Commerce, has been pivotal in building capacities to prevent and treat malnutrition among children. The project’s first phase will conclude in September 2024, focusing on detecting malnourished children and improving nutrition commodity supply chains. Following these accomplishments, a new partnership was established with the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) in December 2024, with an investment of USD 1.48 million aimed at addressing acute malnutrition and enhancing child protection services across the nation.
The delegation’s visit underscored the commitment to integrated health and nutrition services, showcasing advancements such as antenatal care, child vaccinations, and innovative malnutrition detection methods. H.E. Ms. Fang Hong highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing China’s role in improving the health conditions of women and children in Lao PDR.
Additionally, the delegation engaged with Village Health Volunteers, whose efforts are crucial in mobilizing community healthcare access. Mr. Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani reiterated UNICEF’s dedication to strengthening partnerships that aim for positive health outcomes, ensuring that every child in Lao PDR receives the best start in life. The ongoing commitment of these organizations marks a hopeful chapter in the pursuit of better health for all.
